Ethereum Researcher Targets December 2028 for Post-Quantum Transition

Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake has outlined a goal of completing Ethereum’s post-quantum and post-AI transition by December 2028. The proposed timeline is one year earlier than the foundation’s existing December 2029 target for full quantum resistance across the network’s core layers.

Justin Drake Outlines an Accelerated Ethereum Security Timeline

Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake has set December 2028 as a target for completing Ethereum’s post-quantum and post-AI transition. Speaking at Devcon 8 in Mumbai on Tuesday, Drake described the timeline as a goal for developers to work toward over the next 24 months.

“Our hope is that by December 2028 we’ll be able to wrap up the full post-quantum and post-AI transition,” Drake said during his presentation. He added that developers have 24 months to deliver three additional network upgrades. The remarks were shared through the official Devcon account.

The proposed date is more ambitious than the Ethereum Foundation’s existing December 2029 target for full quantum resistance. However, Drake’s statement describes a development goal and does not formally replace the foundation’s published roadmap.

Ethereum’s Existing Roadmap Sets December 2029 Target

The Ethereum Foundation’s September 7, 2026, protocol priorities roadmap identifies December 2029 as the target for achieving full post-quantum resistance across Ethereum’s execution, consensus and data layers.

These layers perform different functions within the network. The execution layer processes transactions and smart contracts, the consensus layer coordinates validators and network agreement, and the data layer supports the availability of information needed by Ethereum and its scaling ecosystem.

The roadmap also describes a staged development process rather than a single upgrade. Reaching full resistance requires changes across multiple parts of the protocol, with research, implementation, testing and coordination among developers. The foundation has scheduled a reassessment of its protocol priorities for January 2027, meaning the published timeline remains subject to review.

Three Network Upgrades Are Part of the Work Ahead

Drake’s comments place the next 24 months at the center of Ethereum’s post-quantum development effort. The three additional upgrades he referenced are part of the work required to advance the transition, although his remarks do not establish a complete delivery schedule or confirm the specific contents of each upgrade.

Post-quantum security is intended to protect Ethereum against future quantum computers capable of breaking cryptographic systems used by current digital networks. Ethereum relies on cryptographic methods for functions including transaction authentication, validator signatures and data commitments. Replacing vulnerable components requires solutions that maintain network security and performance.

The Ethereum Foundation’s post-quantum research portal tracks work across the protocol’s execution, consensus and data layers. Its research includes quantum-resistant signature systems and methods for maintaining efficient validator operations as Ethereum adopts new cryptographic technology.

LeanVM and Earlier Development Plans

Drake had previously outlined a development path involving leanVM, a technology intended to support Ethereum’s post-quantum transition. In August, he described plans for production-ready leanVM technology in 2027, followed by post-quantum deployments across Ethereum’s three core layers in 2028.

LeanVM is part of the effort to address the performance challenges associated with quantum-resistant cryptography. Some post-quantum signature schemes produce larger signatures than the systems Ethereum currently uses. Efficiently verifying and aggregating those signatures is therefore an important part of preparing the network for a different cryptographic foundation.

The Ethereum quantum-resistance roadmap outlines the network’s broader technical approach, including work on validator signatures, signature aggregation and data availability. These efforts are designed to help Ethereum adopt stronger cryptographic protections without compromising the functions required for network operation.

Ethereum’s Timeline Remains a Development Target

The accelerated December 2028 goal comes as other blockchain developers are also examining post-quantum security. In October, Starknet’s community backed research into becoming an independent post-quantum Layer 1 network. StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson had also criticized Ethereum’s previous 2029 target as “too late,” while warning that development deadlines could slip.

The differing timelines highlight the challenges involved in preparing decentralized networks for future cryptographic threats. Protocol upgrades require coordination among researchers, client developers, validators and the wider ecosystem. A proposed completion date does not guarantee that every component will be ready on schedule.

For now, Ethereum’s official roadmap continues to identify December 2029 as the target for full quantum resistance, while Drake has expressed the hope of completing the broader post-quantum and post-AI transition by December 2028. The foundation’s January 2027 reassessment will provide an opportunity to review progress and determine whether the development schedule needs to change.
