Standard Chartered Launches Bitcoin and Ethereum Trading for UAE Wealth Clients

Standard Chartered Adds Crypto Trading to Its Wealth Services

Standard Chartered has launched a cryptocurrency trading service in the United Arab Emirates, allowing eligible affluent clients to buy and sell Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) through their existing banking relationship.

The service follows licensing approval from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). It is initially available to professional investors in the UAE, bringing cryptocurrency transactions into the bank’s existing client environment rather than requiring users to establish separate wallets or rely on third-party trading platforms.

The launch adds digital assets to Standard Chartered’s wealth offering and reflects the continued development of regulated channels connecting traditional banking services with cryptocurrency markets. However, access is restricted to eligible clients, so the service does not represent an unrestricted offering for all UAE bank customers.

How the New Crypto Trading Service Works

Eligible clients can buy and sell Bitcoin and Ether directly through their existing Standard Chartered bank accounts. The bank says the service is designed to provide access to digital assets through its established banking infrastructure.

By keeping the trading experience within the bank’s ecosystem, the offering removes the need for clients to set up separate wallets or use independent third-party platforms to access the supported cryptocurrencies. The arrangement is intended to make digital-asset transactions more accessible to clients who prefer using familiar financial services.

Standard Chartered’s announcement describes the service as a collaboration involving its Wealth and Retail Banking and Corporate and Investment Banking businesses, alongside SC Ventures-backed Zodia Markets. The service is regulated by VARA, which oversees virtual-asset activities in Dubai outside the Dubai International Financial Centre’s jurisdiction.

VARA Approval Defines the Service’s Scope

Regulatory approval is central to the launch because cryptocurrency services in the UAE operate within a framework that distinguishes between providers, licensed activities and eligible client groups.

Standard Chartered has received approval from VARA for the offering, which will initially serve professional investors. The authority maintains a public register of virtual-asset service providers that allows users to check licensing information and authorised activities.

The bank’s professional investor guidance explains that eligibility depends on the applicable classification requirements. As a result, the new service should not be interpreted as a general retail crypto-trading product available automatically to every Standard Chartered customer in the UAE.

Why Direct Bank Access Matters for Ethereum

For Ethereum, the development creates another route through which eligible investors can obtain exposure to Ether using established banking services. Instead of opening a separate account with a crypto exchange, qualifying clients can access ETH through their existing relationship with Standard Chartered.

This may be relevant to investors who prefer dealing with a familiar financial institution and using a consolidated banking experience. It also illustrates how banks are developing services that connect conventional wealth management with digital assets.

The launch does not, by itself, establish how much trading activity Ether will receive through the service or whether wider investor participation will follow. Its immediate significance is the addition of a regulated banking channel for buying and selling ETH alongside Bitcoin.

Standard Chartered’s Wider Digital-Asset Strategy

The new wealth-client service builds on Standard Chartered’s broader work in digital assets. The bank has previously developed cryptocurrency custody and trading capabilities, including a digital-asset custody service in the UAE announced in September 2024.

Its digital-assets business also covers trading and tokenisation, reflecting a strategy that extends beyond a single cryptocurrency product. In September 2026, the bank announced institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading in the UAE through Standard Chartered DIFC, a separate offering regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority.

These services serve different client segments and operate under different regulatory arrangements. The latest wealth offering is specifically designed for eligible affluent professional investors and is regulated by VARA, while the institutional spot-trading service operates through the DIFC framework.

What the Launch Means for Traditional Finance

Standard Chartered’s service provides eligible UAE clients with a bank-based way to access two major cryptocurrencies. For investors, the main change is the ability to trade Bitcoin and Ether through an existing banking relationship without setting up separate wallets or using third-party platforms.

For the wider market, the launch is another example of a traditional financial institution incorporating digital assets into its services under a regulatory framework. It may help familiarise some wealth clients with cryptocurrency markets, although the extent of adoption will depend on eligibility, client demand and how the service develops.

The immediate impact remains limited to the clients who qualify for access. The launch does not confirm future expansion to retail customers or other markets, and it does not guarantee increased demand for ETH. It nevertheless adds another regulated route for eligible investors to participate in cryptocurrency trading through traditional banking infrastructure.
