Hyperliquid Whale Loses $69M in ETH Liquidation, Then Reopens Long

A heavily leveraged Hyperliquid trader saw approximately $69.5 million in Ethereum exposure forcibly closed during a market selloff, realizing a reported $4.48 million loss on the liquidated portion. Around 30 minutes later, the whale deposited $10 million in USDC and opened a new ETH long worth $23.26 million.

Hyperliquid Whale Faces a $69.5 Million Ethereum Liquidation

A large Ethereum position on Hyperliquid was partially liquidated during the October 8 crypto market selloff, closing approximately 28,720 ETH worth around $69.5 million. Onchain tracking attributed the position to a whale whose leveraged bets had previously reached hundreds of millions of dollars across Bitcoin and Ethereum.

The trader’s exposure drew attention earlier in the week when onchain analyst EmberCN tracked margin deposits associated with three Hyperliquid addresses. Together, the addresses reportedly held long positions of approximately 1,140 BTC and 98,090 ETH, with a combined value of about $352 million. These positions were opened roughly two weeks earlier, at average entry prices of $82,205 for Bitcoin and $2,604 for Ether, and initially showed an unrealized profit of approximately $2.66 million.

That cushion disappeared as cryptocurrency prices fell. On October 8, Lookonchain highlighted the risk facing a position containing about 98,089 ETH, then valued at approximately $252.3 million. The reported liquidation thresholds were $2,446.48 and $2,424.47. As Ether dropped through those levels, part of the position was forcibly closed to cover losses. The reported transaction details can be followed through EmberCN’s onchain update.

ETH Price Drop Triggers Forced Closures

Ether fell to approximately $2,420 during the overnight selloff, reaching the levels that threatened the whale’s leveraged position. Around 28,720 ETH was reportedly liquidated, representing roughly $69.5 million in exposure. The realized loss on that portion was estimated at $4.48 million.

Liquidation occurs when a trader’s available collateral can no longer support a leveraged position under the platform’s margin requirements. The exchange or trading protocol closes some or all of the position to limit further losses. The amount of a liquidated position is not the same as the loss incurred: the $69.5 million figure represents the value of the closed ETH exposure, while $4.48 million refers to the reported realized loss on that portion.

The whale’s losses came amid a broader wave of forced closures across the cryptocurrency market. The supplied figures put total liquidations at more than $1.19 billion over 24 hours, including approximately $1.05 billion in long positions. ETH liquidations reached around $350 million, exceeding Bitcoin liquidations of approximately $304 million. Bitcoin also fell below $81,000 during the same market decline, adding pressure across leveraged crypto trades.

Whale Deposits $10 Million in USDC and Reopens an ETH Long

Rather than leaving the market after the liquidation, the trader reportedly added fresh collateral and opened another Ethereum position. About 30 minutes after the forced closure, the whale deposited $10 million in USDC and established a new long of 9,580 ETH, valued at approximately $23.26 million, at an entry price near $2,428.

The new entry was only a few dollars above the price level at which the previous position had been liquidated. A long position is a bet that an asset’s price will rise, so the trader’s decision restored exposure to ETH despite the recent market decline.

Following the new trade, EmberCN estimated that the whale’s total long exposure stood at roughly $288 million, with an unrealized loss of approximately $9.71 million at that point. The reported total included around 78,950 ETH worth approximately $195 million and the existing 1,140 BTC position. These figures reflect the positions and market conditions at the time of the tracking update, rather than a permanent account balance.

The new deposit does not eliminate the risks associated with leverage. Additional collateral can increase the distance to liquidation, but further adverse price movements can still generate losses or trigger additional forced closures.

Two ETH Positions Show Different Liquidation Levels

Public Hyperliquid data showed the whale’s Ethereum exposure split across two linked addresses. According to the reported figures for early October 9 UTC, one address held approximately 39,964 ETH at an average entry price of $2,647, with liquidation near $2,286. The other held around 38,991 ETH at an average entry price of $2,531, with liquidation near $2,299.

The positions can be monitored through the public Hyperliquid account data on Hypurrscan and the second tracked address. The two ETH positions reportedly showed a combined unrealized loss of roughly $8 million, with about $19 million in account equity supporting approximately $196 million in exposure.

That relationship between equity and exposure indicates substantial leverage. The source estimates leverage at around 13x to 14x for each address. At this level, a relatively small adverse price move can have a disproportionate effect on account equity, potentially bringing a position closer to its liquidation threshold.

The whale’s Bitcoin positions reportedly had liquidation prices ranging from $72,198 to $74,379. Those levels were below the Bitcoin price in the low $80,000s at the time of the report, giving the BTC positions more room than the ETH positions under the cited market conditions. However, liquidation thresholds can change as collateral, positions and market prices change.

Why the Whale’s Positions Matter to Crypto Markets

Large leveraged positions on Hyperliquid have become a point of interest for traders tracking market positioning. Because the platform’s trading data is publicly accessible, observers can monitor position sizes, entry prices and estimated liquidation levels to understand where forced selling could occur if prices move sharply.

The whale’s experience illustrates how quickly a profitable position can become vulnerable during a volatile market. Its original combined Bitcoin and Ethereum longs reportedly showed a $2.66 million unrealized profit before the downturn. After ETH crossed the relevant liquidation levels, part of the position was closed at a reported realized loss, and the trader subsequently added collateral to establish a new long.

The activity also highlights the difference between conviction and risk management. Reopening a long after a liquidation indicates renewed exposure to potential ETH price gains, but it does not guarantee a recovery or demonstrate that the trader expects prices to rise immediately. The remaining positions continue to face market and liquidation risk.

The whale is taking the opposite side of some large bearish positions previously observed on Hyperliquid. On October 6, a separate report described linked accounts holding approximately $1.58 billion in Bitcoin and Ether shorts. Comparing large bullish and bearish positions can offer insight into market positioning, but neither side’s exposure reliably predicts the next price move.

For now, the most significant details are the scale of the forced ETH closure, the fresh $10 million USDC deposit and the trader’s decision to reopen a long shortly afterward. The positions remain sensitive to price movements, making their publicly reported liquidation levels important reference points for market watchers.
