Ethereum Scaling Advances as EEZ, Aztec and ZisK Unveil Upgrades

Ethereum’s scaling ecosystem is seeing several technical developments, from cross-network smart contract execution to faster zero-knowledge proofs. The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) has introduced Rollup X on devnet, Aztec has activated its Tierra upgrade, and ZisK has brought its prover to OP Mainnet. Meanwhile, L2BEAT has rebranded as ETHBEAT to reflect a broader research focus across the Ethereum ecosystem.

The announcements highlight different approaches to improving how Ethereum-based networks interact, execute transactions and verify activity.

EEZ Rollup X Demonstrates Synchronous Composability

The Ethereum Economic Zone introduced Rollup X at Devcon 8, alongside the launch of its devnet testnet. The demonstration featured three examples of synchronous composability between Ethereum mainnet and rollups.

The first showed trades using Ethereum Layer 1 liquidity through CoW Swap. The second demonstrated wallet ownership updates across networks through Safe. In the third, a Falcon signature verified on Rollup X authorized a transaction on Ethereum mainnet.

Synchronous composability allows smart contracts on Ethereum and participating rollups to call contracts on other networks and use their responses within the same atomic transaction. Unlike conventional cross-chain interactions, the process does not require a separate bridge message or callback before the transaction can continue.

The EEZ announcement marks a development in efforts to make separate Ethereum-based networks interact more directly. However, Rollup X remains on testnet and is undergoing an independent security audit.

The announcement also connects with plans for Gnosis Chain to migrate to an EEZ rollup in 2027. The proposed transition is expected to preserve existing contracts, balances, addresses, chain ID and xDAI as the gas token. Gnosis has identified faster block production and synchronous composability as priorities for the planned upgrade.

Aztec's Tierra Upgrade Targets Faster Private Transactions

Aztec has activated Tierra, its Alpha V6 network upgrade, with improvements focused on private transaction proving and network security. The update doubles the speed of private transaction proof generation, bringing it to approximately one second on native devices.

The upgrade also introduces formal verification for core cryptographic components and an AI-powered security testing harness. Formal verification uses mathematical methods to check whether components behave according to specified properties, while the testing harness adds another layer to the network's security-testing process.

Another major change concerns communication between Ethereum and Aztec. Message delivery that previously averaged around two minutes can now take as little as 12 seconds. These improvements are intended to make interactions between the two networks faster.

Aztec's official Tierra announcement describes the Alpha V6 release. The upgrade follows Alpha V5, which also focused on faster proving and security improvements. Aztec's network roadmap lists Tierra among its development milestones.

The network combines private and public smart contract execution. Private functions are executed and proved on users' devices, while applications can use the network for activities such as private payments, savings, AI inference and perpetual trading. Aztec has also highlighted applications including zk.money, Galactica and Nemi.

L2BEAT Rebrands as ETHBEAT to Expand Its Research

Ethereum research platform L2BEAT has changed its name to ETHBEAT, reflecting an expanded focus beyond Layer 2 networks. The organization will continue monitoring rollups and other L2 systems while extending its research to privacy, interoperability, tokens, zero-knowledge systems and changes to Ethereum's base layer.

The rebrand follows developments across Ethereum's scaling landscape. As work on Layer 1 scaling progresses, some Layer 2 projects are also developing specialized onchain products that extend beyond their original role of scaling Ethereum.

ETHBEAT says its research will examine the guarantees users receive from different systems, including what users must trust, whether protocols preserve Ethereum's security properties and whether users can exit if other participants stop cooperating.

The organization confirmed that its existing Layer 2 coverage will continue. Its team, research methodology, project assessments and historical data remain in place following the name change.

The official rebrand announcement explains the expanded mandate. The new name is intended to reflect the organization's wider coverage of Ethereum-related infrastructure rather than a departure from Layer 2 research.

ZisK Brings Its Prover to OP Mainnet

ZisK has launched its prover on Optimism's OP Mainnet, introducing a system designed to generate proofs for network blocks in real time.

The project reports that its prover generates a final proof in an average of 11 seconds from the time a transaction batch is included on Ethereum. The implementation uses four NVIDIA RTX 5090 graphics processing units.

ZisK also provided performance figures for its block-proving process. Each Optimism block is proven in an average of 720 milliseconds, followed by another 180 milliseconds to fold the proof into a running aggregate. Together, those steps take approximately 900 milliseconds, within Optimism's two-second block time.

The project said it plans to open-source the repository in the coming weeks. The release is still undergoing security and correctness audits, so the reported performance should be considered in the context of an implementation that has not completed those reviews.

The ZisK launch announcement provides the project's update on bringing its prover to OP Mainnet.

Other Ethereum Ecosystem Developments

Other announcements included a Devcon Day 2 livestream, covering additional discussions and presentations from the event.

In separate ecosystem news, a post by Martin Zeller highlighted a reported $133 million loss involving French bank Crédit Mutuel Arkéa and hackers. The development was shared in Zeller's post.

ApeChain also announced a move from LayerZero to Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) for cross-chain assets. The migration was highlighted in a Chainlink announcement.

What These Developments Mean for Ethereum

The announcements address different parts of Ethereum's infrastructure. EEZ is working on synchronous interactions between networks, Aztec is improving private transaction proving and message delivery, and ZisK is targeting faster proof generation for Optimism blocks. ETHBEAT's expanded research mandate reflects the growing range of systems being built around Ethereum.

These projects remain at different stages of development, with Rollup X on devnet and security reviews still underway for the ZisK release. Their progress will depend on continued testing, security assessments and implementation. Together, however, the updates show how Ethereum's ecosystem is exploring improvements in interoperability, privacy, verification and network performance.
