Aztec Sets 2030 Target for Full Post-Quantum Security Migration

Aztec Network has published a roadmap for transitioning its Ethereum Layer 2 infrastructure toward post-quantum security, targeting hardened privacy libraries by February 2027 and a full migration by 2030. The plan includes upgrades to encryption, account authentication, proving systems and validator signatures.

Aztec Outlines Its Post-Quantum Security Timeline

Aztec Network has published a roadmap outlining how it plans to strengthen its privacy-focused Ethereum Layer 2 against potential future quantum-computing threats. The network is targeting hardened privacy libraries and safer smart-contract development patterns by February 2027, followed by a full post-quantum migration by 2030.

The project’s official roadmap says Aztec’s existing design already protects historical state and encrypted logs against “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks. This threat involves collecting encrypted information today in the hope of decrypting it in the future when more powerful computing capabilities become available.

However, achieving comprehensive post-quantum protection requires more than updating one cryptographic component. Aztec’s planned migration covers application encryption, its proving system, account keys and authentication, validator signatures, and the settlement process involving Ethereum.

Five Key Areas Need Cryptographic Upgrades

Aztec’s roadmap identifies several components that must evolve to support its long-term security goals. Application encryption protects private information, while account keys and authentication determine how users establish control over their accounts. Validator signatures are also important because they support the verification of network activity.

The network must also address its proving system, which is central to demonstrating that computations satisfy specified rules without necessarily revealing private information. Aztec is evaluating several possible approaches, including hash-based proving systems over binary or small prime fields, lattice-based systems and hybrid designs.

Ethereum settlement presents another dependency. Because Aztec operates as a Layer 2 network built on Ethereum, its broader security transition depends partly on cryptographic upgrades to the underlying blockchain. The roadmap therefore involves both changes within Aztec and developments in the Ethereum ecosystem.

Aztec Sets Three Cryptographic Selection Deadlines

Aztec has established a sequence of milestones to narrow down the cryptographic technologies it will use. The selections are intended to guide implementation work ahead of the target for a full migration.

The roadmap sets out three deadlines:

  • March 2027: Choose a post-quantum signature scheme.

  • July 2027: Choose an encryption scheme.

  • November 2027: Choose a proving system.

These decisions will help determine how Aztec protects signatures, encrypted information and computational proofs as it moves toward its 2030 target. The project has not yet finalized all the cryptographic choices described in the roadmap.

Aztec is also exploring a canonical keystore registry, which could move keys out of individual addresses. In addition, the project says it will likely replace Poseidon2 over the longer term. These potential changes form part of its broader effort to adapt its cryptographic infrastructure for future security requirements.

Safe Introduces Safenet Aegis Transaction Protection

Separately, Safe has launched Safenet Aegis, a transaction security protocol designed to assess transactions before execution. The announcement was published through Safe’s official X account.

The system allows transactions to be reviewed by Independent Sentinels, including BlockSec and OpenCover. These participants assess transactions against the Safenet Charter and bond their verdicts. The resulting assessment is combined into one of three outcomes: secure, insecure or disputed.

Validators verify the checks and attest to the results on-chain. An optional Safenet Guard can require a valid attestation for the exact transaction before allowing execution, with a delayed escape hatch available. Each check costs 0.40 USDC, paid to the Sentinels. Sentinels must post a slashable bond, while validators are required to stake at least 3.5 million SAFE tokens.

Safenet Aegis is live on Ethereum mainnet, Arbitrum and Gnosis Chain. The launch adds another transaction-review mechanism to smart-contract wallet infrastructure, although it is separate from Aztec’s post-quantum security roadmap.

Network School Acquires Farcaster

Network School, the experimental residential startup society founded by Balaji Srinivasan, has acquired Farcaster from Neynar. The financial terms were not disclosed. The acquisition announcement was shared in an X post.

Following the deal, the main Farcaster client is being rebranded as the Network State Protocol. The client is becoming an opt-in community governed by a Singapore-like conduct code. Users must sign a social smart contract and follow rules set by the Network School core team to gain write access.

The Network Code prohibits hate speech, threats, scams, spam, malware, NSFW material and undisclosed AI content. The team plans to use AI-assisted moderation. Some users have reported being retroactively banned under the new rules, which apply to both previous and new posts. Users who vote to decline the terms or select “not now” can continue using their accounts in read-only mode. The underlying Farcaster protocol will remain open, with third-party clients such as Firefly still available.

Lido Adds Direct ETH Staking From Layer 2 Networks

Lido Finance has launched direct ETH staking through its user interface for users on Arbitrum, Base, Linea and Optimism. The announcement appeared on Lido’s official X account.

The feature uses Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) to handle transfers between networks, removing the need for users to bridge ETH manually. On each supported Layer 2, ETH is exchanged for wrapped staked ETH (wstETH) through a dedicated pool using a Chainlink price feed.

Behind the scenes, ETH is transferred to Ethereum mainnet and staked through Lido. The resulting wstETH is then returned to replenish the relevant pool. This structure connects Layer 2 user access with Lido’s Ethereum-based staking process.

Other Crypto Developments to Watch

Ledger has introduced Atom, a mobile phone-like hardware wallet device with 5G connectivity and AI agent controls. The device is being described as quantum-ready, carries a price of $849 and is scheduled to ship in mid-2027. The announcement was shared by Ledger executive Pascal Gauthier in an X post.

Elsewhere, Forkcast shared a summary of ACDC #189 indicating that four additional Ethereum Improvement Proposals were denied for Hegota. Compound Finance also went live on the Safe app store, while Mastercard introduced its Global Money Platform. Fhenix plans to launch its mainnet on October 21.

Together, these developments span cryptographic security, transaction protection, social infrastructure, staking access and payment services. Aztec’s roadmap stands out for its extended timeline: its immediate work focuses on hardened libraries and safer development practices, while its broader objective is a full post-quantum migration by 2030.
