BitMine Sets 5% Ethereum Supply Cap as Target Nears

BitMine Chairman Tom Lee says the company will stop accumulating Ether once its holdings reach 5% of Ethereum’s supply. BitMine is now near the target after accumulating roughly 6 million ETH.

BitMine Sets a Hard 5% Ethereum Limit

BitMine Immersion Technologies is turning its long-running Ethereum accumulation strategy into a firm ceiling, with Chairman Tom Lee saying the company will not hold more than 5% of ETH supply.

Speaking at Token2049 in Singapore on Wednesday, Lee said BitMine has accumulated roughly 6 million ETH, representing about 4.9% of Ethereum's supply. The company needs approximately 100,000 additional ETH to reach the 5% threshold.

“That’s a hard cap. We’re not gonna be accumulating past 5%,” Lee said. “We’re not gonna own more than 5% of Ethereum.”

BitMine has described its approach as the “Alchemy of 5%” strategy. The company's own materials say its objective is to build a large Ethereum treasury while using activities such as staking and decentralized finance. BitMine's official investor information provides additional details about its Ethereum treasury strategy.

From Accumulation Target to Hard Ceiling

The 5% level had previously been presented as a target rather than an absolute limit. Lee had left open the possibility that BitMine could eventually accumulate more than 5% depending on Ethereum adoption, with a potential reassessment discussed for 2027.

That position has now changed. Lee's latest comments make clear that the company intends to stop adding ETH once its holdings reach the 5% threshold.

The distinction is important because Ethereum's supply is not fixed in the same way as Bitcoin's. Ethereum's total ETH supply changes over time through the balance between new issuance to validators and the burning of transaction fees. Ethereum's official explanation of ETH supply notes that staking issuance and EIP-1559 fee burning both influence the network's circulating supply.

BitMine Says It Is Done Stacking ETH

Lee said BitMine built much of its Ethereum position during a crypto bear market, allowing the company to accumulate ETH while prices were lower.

“We did all this buying in a bear market,” Lee said. “We protected the downside for ETH because we were buying. But now, we’re done stacking in front of a 25X move.”

The chairman also linked the 5% ceiling to BitMine's broader capital strategy. Once the company stops purchasing additional ETH, it would no longer need to continually raise capital specifically to expand its Ethereum holdings.

“So if we have a 5% hard cap, that means we’re gonna outperform ETH on the way up, right?” Lee said. “‘Cause you don’t have to worry about us trying to raise capital. We’re done.”

BitMine's approach has involved significant use of the capital markets to finance its Ethereum treasury. The company has used equity and preferred-stock offerings as part of its strategy while continuing to build its ETH position.

BitMine Has Used Capital Markets to Build Its Treasury

BitMine launched a $300 million perpetual preferred stock offering in June, providing another source of capital for its broader treasury strategy.

According to an SEC filing, BitMine priced an offering of 3.5 million shares of 9.50% Series A Perpetual Preferred Stock at $80 per share. The company estimated net proceeds of approximately $273.8 million after underwriting discounts, commissions and offering expenses. BitMine's SEC filing for the preferred stock offering documents the transaction.

The company also previously authorized a $4 billion common-share buyback program and had repurchased millions of shares as it continued managing its capital structure alongside its ETH accumulation strategy.

BitMine's broader corporate strategy is centered on increasing the amount of ETH held per share while maintaining its position as an Ethereum-focused treasury company. BitMine's official company overview describes ETH as its primary treasury reserve asset.

Staking Could Still Increase BitMine's ETH Holdings

Reaching the 5% ceiling does not necessarily mean BitMine's relationship with Ethereum will stop growing.

The company stakes a substantial portion of its ETH holdings, generating additional ETH through validator rewards. Ethereum's proof-of-stake system allows ETH holders to participate in network security and receive rewards for validating transactions. Ethereum's official staking guide explains how staking works and how validators earn rewards.

This creates a potential challenge for BitMine once it reaches its 5% limit. Even if the company stops buying ETH on the open market, staking rewards could gradually increase its total holdings and push its share of Ethereum's supply above the intended ceiling.

Lee has previously indicated that BitMine could sell ETH generated through staking if necessary to prevent its ownership percentage from rising beyond 5%.

That means the 5% cap could influence not only BitMine's future purchases but also how the company manages staking rewards and its overall ETH treasury.

What the 5% Cap Means for BitMine's Strategy

BitMine's latest position changes the role of the 5% target from an accumulation objective into a maximum ownership threshold.

The company is now approaching the limit after building a treasury of roughly 6 million ETH, leaving approximately 100,000 ETH to reach 5% based on the figures cited by Lee. Once that threshold is reached, BitMine says it will stop accumulating additional ETH through purchases.

The strategy also means future growth in the company's Ethereum exposure could increasingly depend on how it manages its existing holdings, including staking and other Ethereum-based activities, rather than simply increasing the number of ETH it owns.

For Ethereum, BitMine's position also represents a notable example of a public company building a large corporate treasury around ETH. The company's stated strategy is to accumulate a significant share of supply while participating in the network through staking and other activities.

BitMine's Next Milestone Is the 5% Threshold

BitMine's immediate objective is now straightforward: acquire the remaining ETH needed to reach 5% of Ethereum's supply and then stop accumulating.

Lee's latest comments remove the uncertainty around whether BitMine might continue buying beyond that level. The company now intends to treat 5% as a hard ceiling rather than simply another milestone.

The next stage will therefore focus less on additional accumulation and more on how BitMine manages the ETH already in its treasury, including the treatment of staking rewards. With Ethereum's supply constantly changing through issuance and burning, maintaining a precise 5% share may also require ongoing treasury management.

For now, BitMine remains focused on reaching the final portion of its “Alchemy of 5%” strategy before ending its accumulation campaign.
