Ethereum Whale Moves $37M in ETH to OKX at a Loss

Two Ethereum wallets dormant for more than a year transferred 14,700 ETH worth about $36.94 million to OKX. Onchain data suggests the coins were acquired in 2021 at significantly higher prices.

Two Long-Dormant Ethereum Wallets Move 14,700 ETH

Two Ethereum wallets that had remained largely inactive for more than a year have transferred a combined 14,700 ETH, worth approximately $36.94 million, to OKX.

The transactions took place on September 14, 2026, with the two wallets sending their holdings to the same OKX deposit address within roughly 85 minutes of each other. Blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain flagged the transfers and suggested the addresses could belong to the same large Ethereum holder. Lookonchain transfer alert

The transaction history provides some evidence supporting that possibility. Both wallets were funded by the same address in 2021 and later moved their ETH to the same exchange deposit address. The transfers also occurred in several batches, including smaller transactions that appear to have preceded the larger deposits.

The Two Wallets Trace Back to 2021

The first address, 0x8155, received 5,000 ETH on August 19, 2021. On September 14, 2026, it transferred the funds to the OKX deposit address in three transactions: 1 ETH, 999 ETH and 4,000 ETH. Wallet 0x8155 on Etherscan

The second address, 0x49f1, received a significantly larger amount of 9,700 ETH on October 25, 2021. It subsequently transferred 100 ETH, 4,900 ETH and 4,700 ETH to the same OKX destination during the September 14 activity. Wallet 0x49f1 on Etherscan

The initial 1 ETH and 100 ETH transfers were relatively small compared with the remaining balances. Such transfers can be used as test transactions before larger movements, although the transaction records alone do not establish why the wallet owner made those smaller transfers.

Why the Transfers Represent a Potential $20 Million Loss

The difference between the value of the ETH in 2021 and its value at the time of the latest transfers is substantial.

ETH closed at approximately $3,184 on August 19, 2021, when the first wallet received its 5,000 ETH. The second wallet received its 9,700 ETH on October 25, 2021, when ETH was around $4,220.

Using those historical prices, the combined 14,700 ETH was worth approximately $56.9 million when the coins entered the two wallets. At roughly $36.94 million when deposited to OKX, the difference is about $20 million, or approximately 35%.

That figure should be viewed as an estimated value difference rather than a confirmed realized loss. Onchain records show transfers to an exchange, but they do not by themselves prove that the entire 14,700 ETH was sold.

The ETH Was Previously Used for Ethereum Staking

The wallets were not completely inactive throughout the entire period.

In 2024, both addresses sent thousands of ETH to a batch-deposit contract used to create Ethereum validators. The larger wallet, in particular, made three separate deposits of 3,220 ETH each on June 19, 2024. Ethereum batch-deposit contract on Etherscan

The ETH subsequently returned to the wallets, consistent with validator exits. This means the simple calculation based only on the original acquisition value does not capture any staking rewards generated during the period.

However, those rewards would need to be considered alongside the amount of ETH ultimately transferred to determine the wallet owner's actual cost basis and realized result. The available transaction information does not provide enough information to calculate a definitive realized profit or loss.

Another 2021 Ethereum Wallet Moves Funds

The latest activity is not isolated to the two wallets that sent 14,700 ETH to OKX.

Onchain analyst EmberCN also tracked another address, 0x08E8, that received 1,500 ETH on September 24, 2021. On September 14, 2026, the wallet transferred 1,250 ETH to MAX Exchange. The remaining 249.99 ETH followed early on September 15. Wallet 0x08E8 on Etherscan

Based on the historical acquisition price and current value, the 1,500 ETH position could represent a loss of more than 20% if the transfers ultimately result in sales. Again, a transfer to an exchange does not necessarily mean that the assets have already been sold.

EmberCN separately reported that the entity associated with the larger wallet group had accumulated more than 20,000 ETH during the previous bull market at an average cost above the current market price. The analyst also estimated an average transfer price of approximately $2,517 per ETH for the recent deposits. EmberCN analysis of the Ethereum whale transfers

Large Ethereum Holders Have Remained Active

The movements come amid other notable activity involving older or large Ethereum holdings.

Bitcoin.com News previously reported on a whale that routed approximately 167,855 ETH, valued at about $408 million at the time, to cryptocurrency exchanges between late August and early September. It has also reported movements from Ethereum wallets dating back to the network's early years, including addresses that had remained dormant for more than a decade

These transactions do not necessarily indicate a coordinated selling strategy. Large holders can move assets between wallets, exchanges, staking infrastructure and custody arrangements for many different reasons. The blockchain records the movement of funds, but the owner's specific intention is not always visible.

For that reason, the key fact in the latest transaction is the unusually large amount of ETH moved to an exchange after several years of holding and staking activity.

ETH Price Adds Context to the Whale Transfers

At the time referenced in the original report, ETH was trading near $2,465. That put the cryptocurrency approximately 16% below its January opening level of $2,970 and around 49% below its record price of $4,946, which was reached in August of the previous year.

Bitcoin had performed somewhat better over the same period, trading roughly 11% below its January level of $87,650.

The price difference helps explain why the 2021 ETH purchases are currently worth considerably less than they were when the wallets initially acquired the coins. However, the whale's eventual financial result cannot be determined from exchange deposits alone because the wallets also participated in staking and may have accumulated rewards.

For now, the onchain activity shows that 14,700 ETH worth about $36.94 million has moved to OKX, while the historical transaction data indicates that those coins entered the wallets in 2021 at considerably higher market values. Whether the transfers ultimately become sales remains the key detail to watch.
