Justin Drake Urges Ethereum Holders to Prepare for Post-Quantum Risk

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake is urging major crypto holders to enter “bunker mode” as advances in mathematics could create a risk to ECDSA wallet signatures before large-scale quantum computers arrive. Meanwhile, Lido is developing a new lending market and Sepolia has reached a 200 million gas limit.

Justin Drake Urges Ethereum Holders to Prepare for Post-Quantum Risk

Justin Drake Warns of a Potential ECDSA Threat

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake has urged the blockchain industry to enter “bunker mode” as advances in mathematics could create a new risk for wallets relying on ECDSA signatures.

The concern is centered on the possibility that private keys could eventually be recovered from exposed public keys using existing computing resources, including large GPU clusters. Drake has warned that such a development could arrive earlier than the traditional timeline associated with a major quantum breakthrough, potentially turning the security window from years into months.

Ethereum’s existing cryptographic design relies heavily on elliptic-curve structures. Drake’s warning focuses on the possibility that mathematical advances could weaken those structures before sufficiently powerful quantum computers become available. His earlier estimates have placed the traditional Quantum-Day scenario before 2030.

The issue has also increased attention on Ethereum’s longer-term transition toward cryptographic systems designed to withstand these threats.

Ethereum’s post-quantum research and roadmap

Hash-Based Wallets Could Reduce the Exposure

Drake is encouraging large holders, sophisticated users and institutions to begin a controlled migration toward addresses where public keys remain hidden behind a cryptographic hash.

The strategy is designed to reduce exposure before an address is used to sign a transaction. A fresh address can keep its public key hidden until funds are spent, creating an additional layer of protection against attacks that depend on recovering private keys from publicly available cryptographic information.

Drake has suggested that large holders move most of their assets to new addresses and subsequently move any remaining funds after signing transactions. The approach would allow users to reduce the amount of capital exposed through previously revealed public keys while Ethereum works toward broader post-quantum protections.

He has also called for faster progress toward hash-based cryptography as part of Ethereum’s development roadmap.

Ethereum Security Concerns Extend Beyond ECDSA

The warning comes shortly after Consensys founder Joseph Lubin moved $350 million worth of assets to a new wallet, adding to attention around wallet-security practices among major Ethereum ecosystem participants.

MetaMask is also rotating validator keys following a potential security incident, although details surrounding the incident have not been disclosed.

Post-quantum hardware development is advancing as well. Freedom Factory has introduced its PQ1 hardware wallet, which uses the SPHINCS+C10 hashing algorithm as part of its security architecture.

These developments highlight the growing focus on cryptographic resilience as Ethereum prepares for threats that could emerge from both advances in computing and advances in mathematical techniques.

Lido Develops New Ethereum Lending Market

Lido Finance contributors have unveiled plans for Lido Lend, a decentralized lending market based on a modified version of the Morpho Blue protocol.

The proposed system would use isolated lending markets and include mechanisms designed to screen deposits for compromised funds. It also aims to provide lenders with reliable exit options during periods of full market utilization or liquidity stress.

Initial markets are expected to concentrate on established, price-correlated assets such as ETH and stETH. This structure could allow lending activity to develop around assets already closely connected to Ethereum staking and the Lido ecosystem.

Lido plans to publish technical specifications, market parameters and audit reports in the coming weeks. The proposal would then move to a Lido DAO governance vote, with a potential launch targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026.

Other Ethereum Ecosystem Developments

Several additional developments are emerging across the wider Ethereum ecosystem.

Octant has announced participants for Epoch 13, while Robinhood executive Johann Kerbrat disclosed that the company holds $25 million in Bitcoin but no Ethereum.

Ostium has also provided an update related to its OLP recovery process, while Ledger Wallet is supporting crypto-backed loans powered by Morpho.

Together, the developments point to an Ethereum ecosystem dealing with two very different priorities at the same time: strengthening the network against long-term cryptographic threats while expanding its infrastructure for lending, staking and higher-throughput transaction execution.

Ethereum Faces a Long-Term Security Transition

Drake’s warning puts cryptographic security back into focus for Ethereum users holding substantial amounts of ETH and other assets. The immediate concern is not simply the arrival of quantum computers, but whether mathematical breakthroughs could reduce the time available to migrate vulnerable assets.

At the same time, Ethereum’s technical roadmap continues to push toward higher execution capacity. Sepolia’s 200 million gas milestone and the performance improvements observed after Glamsterdam provide an early test of how the network could handle significantly larger workloads.

The combination of post-quantum preparation, higher execution capacity and new financial infrastructure shows how Ethereum’s development is expanding beyond short-term scaling. Security architecture, lending markets and execution performance are increasingly becoming interconnected parts of the network’s next phase.
