Lido Upgrade Could Cut Ethereum Validator Count by One-Third with Curated Module v2

Lido has unveiled Curated Module v2, a major infrastructure upgrade designed to improve Ethereum staking efficiency, strengthen network decentralization, and significantly reduce the number of active validators on the Ethereum network.

The latest update introduces support for Ethereum's 0x02 withdrawal credentials, allowing validators to increase their effective staking balance from the current 32 ETH to as much as 2,048 ETH. By enabling larger validator balances, Lido aims to consolidate validator operations without reducing the total amount of ETH securing the network.

Lido Upgrade Could Reduce Ethereum Validators by 30%

According to Lido's projections, the upgrade could lower Ethereum's validator count from approximately 880,000 to around 628,000, representing a reduction of nearly one-third.

Although the migration has not yet begun, Lido believes the transition will make Ethereum's consensus layer more efficient by decreasing the number of validators and validator messages required to maintain network security and consensus.

Importantly, this optimization is expected to affect only the consensus layer. The execution layer, which processes transactions and determines gas fees, will remain unchanged, meaning users should not expect any direct impact on Ethereum transaction costs.

Enhanced Security and Accountability for Node Operators

Curated Module v2 also introduces a stronger accountability framework for Lido's node operators.

The upgrade implements new bonding requirements and penalty mechanisms, encouraging operators to maintain high performance and reliable network participation. Future stake allocation within Lido's validator set will increasingly consider factors such as:

  • Validator performance and uptime

  • Competitive operator fees

  • Contributions to Ethereum's ecosystem

  • Overall network reliability

These changes are designed to improve both the quality and decentralization of Lido's validator network over time.

No Action Required for stETH Holders

Lido confirmed that users staking ETH through stETH do not need to take any action. The entire migration process will be managed automatically at the protocol level, ensuring a seamless transition for existing stakers.

Why the Upgrade Matters

As Ethereum continues to scale, reducing unnecessary validator overhead has become an important topic within the ecosystem. By allowing validators to secure larger balances, Lido's Curated Module v2 aims to make the network more efficient while preserving decentralization and strengthening operator incentives.

The upgrade represents one of Lido's most significant infrastructure improvements to date and reflects the protocol's long-term commitment to enhancing Ethereum staking, validator security, and network performance.
