Abstract Will Shut Down on Dec. 15
Pudgy Penguins parent company Igloo is shutting down Abstract, its consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 network, after spending tens of millions of dollars attempting to build a sustainable blockchain business.
Abstract is scheduled to stop operating on Dec. 15, 2026. Users have been instructed to move their assets off the network before the deadline because funds remaining on Abstract after the shutdown could become inaccessible. Users can use the project's migration tools or bridge their assets before operations end.
Abstract launched its mainnet in January 2025 with a strategy centered on bringing mainstream consumers into crypto. Instead of focusing primarily on complex financial applications, the network was designed around consumer products, entertainment, games and branded experiences. Pudgy Penguins had hoped its established audience could help drive adoption of the network.
Igloo Spent Tens of Millions Supporting the Network
Igloo CEO Luca Netz said the company had funded Abstract for approximately 18 months. Despite the investment, the network did not achieve the level of product-market fit needed to justify continued spending.
Netz said Igloo considered several options for keeping Abstract alive, including launching a token or pursuing an initial coin offering. The company ultimately rejected those options rather than creating a token without sufficient conviction that it could generate sustainable demand.
“Even after losing 8 figures, we could have launched a token or pursued an ICO. Ultimately we decided against this,” Netz wrote on X.
Netz said the company could no longer justify taking resources from the Pudgy Penguins business to continue funding Abstract. Igloo will instead concentrate its resources on Pudgy Penguins, its digital collectibles and PENGU.
Abstract Built Significant Activity but Struggled to Scale
The shutdown comes despite Abstract reporting substantial activity since launch. The network said it processed more than 325 million transactions and recorded approximately $6 billion in decentralized-exchange trading.
Abstract also reported around 4 million wallets, while businesses operating across the network generated more than $40 million in revenue. Major brands, including Disney and Red Bull Racing, participated in the ecosystem.
However, activity across applications does not necessarily translate into enough revenue for the underlying blockchain. Applications can generate income from trading, purchases or other services, while the layer-2 itself receives fees for processing transactions and must use that revenue to cover its operating costs.
DeFiLlama's Abstract data showed only about $3,900 in chain fees over the latest 24-hour period, compared with roughly $39,000 in application revenue across the network at the time cited in the report.
Limited DeFi and Liquidity Weighed on Abstract
Abstract's consumer-first strategy also meant that it did not initially prioritize traditional decentralized-finance applications.
At launch, Netz encouraged developers building financial applications to consider other networks such as Berachain and Arbitrum, while Abstract sought to establish itself around entertainment and consumer-focused products.
The strategy helped differentiate Abstract from many other Ethereum layer-2 networks, but it also left the chain with a smaller market for financial applications. The team now points to stalled growth, thin liquidity, limited institutional activity and a restricted DeFi ecosystem among the factors that made the business difficult to sustain.
The shutdown announcement follows a similar decision from Blast, another Ethereum layer-2 network. Blast announced on Oct. 2 that it would wind down because its operating costs exceeded the revenue generated by the network. Blast's shutdown announcement and withdrawal information provides users with instructions for moving assets off the chain.
Abstract Becomes the Second Ethereum L2 to Shut Down in Days
Abstract's closure makes it the second Ethereum-linked layer-2 network in less than a week to announce that it will stop operating.
Blast had previously attracted more than $2 billion in deposits and was backed by prominent investors including Paradigm. Its shutdown came after the network's economics became difficult to sustain, according to the project's announcement.
Abstract followed a different path, positioning itself around consumer crypto and the Pudgy Penguins brand. The network's closure therefore highlights the challenge of building a sustainable business around a specialized blockchain, even when that network has recognizable brands, users and applications.
The development also comes as the Ethereum layer-2 sector remains highly competitive, with networks competing for developers, liquidity, applications and users.
Users Must Move Assets Before the Deadline
For Abstract users, the most immediate issue is the Dec. 15 shutdown deadline.
The project has instructed users to transfer their assets before the network stops operating. Abstract's migration infrastructure and native bridge are available for users moving funds to other networks.
Users who leave assets on Abstract beyond the shutdown date risk losing access to those funds. The project has also indicated that its engineering and ecosystem teams will work with applications built on Abstract as they transition to other networks.
The situation makes the shutdown more than a change in development strategy. Developers, applications and users operating on Abstract must now determine where their assets and projects will move after the network closes.
Igloo Returns Its Focus to Pudgy Penguins
With Abstract winding down, Igloo is shifting its attention back toward the business that originally gave it a large consumer audience.
Pudgy Penguins began as an NFT collection and has expanded into toys, entertainment, games and merchandise. Its PENGU token has also become part of the broader Pudgy Penguins ecosystem.
The decision not to launch an Abstract token means Igloo will not use a new token sale or ICO to finance the network's continued operation. Instead, the company intends to focus its resources on strengthening the Pudgy Penguins brand and its existing digital-asset ecosystem.
Abstract's shutdown ultimately marks the end of Igloo's attempt to operate a consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 as a standalone business. Despite millions of wallets, hundreds of millions of transactions and participation from major brands, the network was unable to establish an economic model that justified continued funding.
